Where did you grow up, and were you a city kid or farm kid?
I grew up on my family's farm between Firth and Hickman, Nebraska. They usually found me outside. As the oldest, I helped my Dad – and as a true farm kid, I learned to drive our old International tractor.
What is your background and area of expertise?
Growing up on a farm, I developed a background in agriculture. I have fond memories of helping my grandparents in their large garden and admiring my grandma's beautiful flowers. Initially, I enjoyed math and science and considered pursuing a career in the medical field. However, at some point, I changed direction and obtained my degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture. My focus now is on managing landscapes and urban gardening.
What year did you make your first appearance on Backyard Farmer?
My first appearance was in 2009 – talking about the containers I created at the State Fair Grounds – the last year it was in Lincoln.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Backyard Farmer show?
The best part of being involved with BYF is helping people transform their landscapes into personal retreats. Plants contribute to happiness and well-being, and they can assist anyone in cultivating their own plant oasis—even if it's just one plant on their desk!
What’s one piece of advice you find yourself giving most often?
Although I am running out of space in my landscape, I convince myself that everything will fit! Maybe not the best advice BUT – I need to see how it grows – then I can talk about it 😉
What’s the most unusual question you’ve been asked on Backyard Farmer?
That is a hard one. I think maybe one from my Mom. She moved to southern Texas and has orange trees, she wanted me to tell her how to take care of them. I referred her to the Extension Master Gardeners in her county, and told her I was no longer her go to for plant questions 😉
Do you have a favorite plant, tree, flower, disease, bug, or critter — and why?
I like them all – that is why I don’t have any more space in my own yard!
What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I taught myself how to crochet and made Jody a lone star tick
What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of work?
Working in my back yard
