Kait Chapman Headshot
Kait Chapman is an Extension Educator of Urban Entomology serving Lancaster, York, Seward, Cass and Otoe Counties. Kait received her Bachelor’s degree in Insect Science and Master's in Entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Where did you grow up, and were you a city kid or farm kid?

Papillion, NE, City kid!

What is your background and area of expertise?

I received my Bachelor's degree in Insect Science and Master's in Entomology. I'm currently an Extension Educator of Urban Entomology, primarily working with insects that affect people like bed bugs, cockroaches, head lice, and ticks. I also support our horticulture team by helping answer questions on landscape insects, both friend and foe.

What year did you make your first appearance on Backyard Farmer?

2021

What do you enjoy most about being part of the Backyard Farmer show?

I learn something new every show! The other panelists are so knowledgeable and a joy to work with.

What’s one piece of advice you find yourself giving most often?

If you find a bug, always identify first. Some bugs may be at the scene of the crime or look scary, but most are harmless and may even be beneficial. It's important to ID before you treat.

What’s the most unusual question you’ve been asked on Backyard Farmer?

We received a viewer question, asking about the use a worm shocker to manage invasive jumping worms. Never heard of a worm shocker, but sounds fun.

Do you have a favorite plant, tree, flower, disease, bug, or critter — and why?

I love aphids. I know they are a pain to have in the garden sometimes, but I used to study them in graduate school and find them so fascinating and cute.

What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you?

Despite being on Backyard Farmer, I do NOT have a green thumb. While I'm still learning, I've definitely killed many plants on my gardening journey...

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of work?

It's probably not surprising, but I love to go out into nature and go bug catching with my children when the weather is nice.
