BYF Garden Journal

May 22, 2009
Today we planted the garden.  We included vegetables, annual flowers, and herbs.  Many of the plants were started indoors in March, but we also purchased some plants from local nurseries!

May 25, 2009
Many of our annual flowers are stressed.  They were very root bound when we planted and the long weekend took it's toll on them.  We cut many of then back and are hoping they will come out of it.

May 27, 2009
We purchased flowerpots and placed them in the garden today.  It is great to add some hardscapes to your garden.  We have made one flowerpot all edible with herbs, and veggies!  It rained today so we did not have to water, that is always great!

June 2, 2009
It has finally rained here, we got just less then 1/2 inch.  We are working on getting mulch down and also installing a watering system.  Everything is starting to look good, the stressed annuals are starting to come around!

June 3, 2009
Wow! That rain does make everything look good!  We got the mulch down, it never seems to go as far as you think, we will need another truck load.  I took pictures of the peppers we planted.  One that we pinched back and one that we planted lying down.  I am looking forward to what kind of crop we will get from each process.  I have a few small tomatoes on the plants but I am going to pinch the first few off the get a better stand on the plant.

June 4, 2009
We planted a few more things by seed today: Broom corn, a few more zucchini, beans, marigolds, and the watermelon.  Our watermelon is one of the small refrigerator size fruits, we had to plant a pollinator plant with the desired plant, I think we will have lots of watermelon vines!  We started our plant list so we can keep track of what we liked and what we did not like.  Check back as we add more of the plants in our garden to the list.

June 8, 2009
Wow! Almost three inches of rain over the past few days, now the sun can shine and warm up!

June 9, 2009
Rain rain go away!!!  (not really, but our plants need a breather and some sun).

June 11, 2009
I just read a great article in the New York Times about neighbors sharing crops, what a great idea!  Check out the article and see if you can start sharing your garden with your neighbors!  I know we will have plenty, and maybe they will have something you did not grow, I will be looking for corn.  Here is the link to the article.

June 22, 2009
I knew it was too good to be true, everything has been going so well.  I was out inspecting the garden today and found Rots & Spots and Insects.  One of our tomatoes does not look well and we have things eating our cabbages and kohlrabi.  I am glad I check out the garden everyday the way those bugs are eating everything will be going in a couple of days.

June 25, 2009
Wow!  Can it get any hotter?  I finally had to start water the flowerpots, we have been lucky to get rain just when it was time to start watering.  I picked all of the flowers off the herbs this morning, before it got too hot to be outside.  We had two nice zucchini that I picked, I hope someone will make me some zucchini bread!

July 9, 2009
Where has the summer gone, after the Forth of July it seems like fall is right around the corner.  I hope you all saw the koharabi on BYF Thursday night.  I'm sure they were good, I was on vacation when they were picked and no one shared.  I have been looking into a fall crop:  peas and maybe brussel sprouts, and a few more green beans.

July 21, 2009
Wow!  Is it July or September?  We got about 1/2 inch of rain yesterday,  we still have to water the flowerpots but the garden has been holding it's own pretty well.  We have been harvesting zuchinni for a couple of weeks and now our tomatoes and peppers are starting to get ripe.  Jim and Fred, the bug guys, have been checking things out and so far so good, we have not had too many insect problems.  The tomatoes are starting to get blight and someone in the neighborhood has been spraying, the tomatoes & eggplant have herbicide drift dammage.

August 6, 2009
We are starting to be overrun by tomatoes!  We are taking our produce to FoodNet of Lincoln, to date we have donated about 40 pounds of produce.  We are also extending to growing season by planting a fall garden.  On Garden Steps, John Fech is explaining how to grow a fall vegetable garden.  It is going to be hot this weekend keep an eye on your plants.

We have had a great time with the first BYF Garden!  We hope you check us out next year with a bigger and better garden!!
